Enterprise will recycle up to 20 tons of batteries per month
Kazakhstan opened the first lithium-ion battery recycling facility. Technic Destroy LLP is located in small industrial park Industrial Place on the territory of “Industrial Zone of Almaty”, correspondent of business information center Kapital.kz reports with reference to press-service of Almaty SEC.
The area is 1,000 square meters and the number of jobs is 20. The facility is equipped with equipment capable of processing lithium-ion batteries of at least 20 tons per month. The recycling technology makes it possible to recover valuable materials such as lithium-containing powder, aluminum, copper and other components that can be used in further production.
“It is estimated that recycling 1 ton of used batteries can save up to 250 kg of lithium, significantly reducing the need to mine new material. Recycling also reduces the amount of waste that would end up in landfills, negatively impacting the environment. When batteries decompose, the toxins lithium, nickel and cobalt can leach into the soil and percolate into aquifers. This not only deteriorates the quality of soil, making it unsuitable for agriculture, but also pollutes water resources, damaging ecosystems and human health,” the SEC said.
Recycling avoids these risks by disposing of hazardous substances and returning valuable materials to the production cycle.
