
Small and medium businesses continue to play a key role in the economic development of Almaty, forming the basis of the city's economy and ensuring its sustainability. This was reported by the Almaty City Economy Department.
According to the results of 2024, the volume of output by SMEs amounted to 24.9 trillion tenge, an increase of 13.9% compared to the previous year. The share of SMEs in the city's gross regional product reached 60.3%, which is one of the highest rates in the country.
The SME sector remains the main source of employment: in 2024, it employed 972.1 thousand people, which is 90% of the total employment in Almaty. As of May 1, 2025, the number of active business entities in the city reached 378.9 thousand units, which is 7.4% more than at the beginning of the current year.
In April 2025, Almaty recorded the highest business activity in the republic: the business activity index was 57.9%.
This year, 70 billion tenge were allocated to support small and medium businesses, of which 52.8 billion tenge came from the local budget, or 2.5 times more than in 2024.
Almaty continues to create favorable conditions for the development of entrepreneurship, strengthening the city's status as a center of business initiative and sustainable economic growth.
